12/03/2008 - Greens Hotel Woburn Sands Application to convert and extend into 50 bed nursing home and 36 close care apartments. is refused by the Development Control Committee

Mr Menday purchased, for a nominal sum, the land, formerly owned by the Woburn Sands Sports and Social Club after the Club ran into financial problems, in the 1990ís. A planning application was made to MK Council to build Greenís Hotel on the site arguing that a hotel was essential for the survival of the high street This was successful in 1999. Assurances in respect of the future of both the Tennis and the Bowls section of the Sports and Social Club were given.

Having built the Hotel, Mr Menday, them made application in 2004 for 49 units of warden assisted housing. This was withdrawn, and then a planning application was made for outline permission for 48 warden assisted units in 2005. Following Council officers report, the application was again withdrawn.

Mr Menday then made application to Mid Bed District Council in 2006, to relocate the Bowls Club to a field close to the recreation ground in Aspley Guise. This was refused by Mid Bed District council on the grounds that it was contrary to Local Plan policies but was successful on appeal subject to some stringent conditions. It is of note that the leases for the tennis club expires in 2008 and the bowls club in 2015.

Mr Menday made application to MK Council in 2007 to convert and substantially extend Greenís Hotel into a 50 bed nursing home and 36 closed care apartments. Strong representations were made to oppose this application, including representations from Woburn Sands Town Council, local parish councils of Aspley Guise, Aspley Heath, and Wavendon, Woburn Sands and District Society and Woburn Sands Business Association.

See the Representation and Documents Library for WSDS representation.

The Application was considered by the MK Councilís Development Control Committee on the 6th March adjourned to the 27th March to obtain a copy of the Planning Inspector's report on the Bowling Club application. For the officer report, see Development Control Committee Meeting for the 6th March 2008 at:

At the meeting on the 27th March, the planning application was refused by a narrow margin. Almost certainly Mr Menday will appeal so the battle is still on.
